 Lightscape

Time Out says

The L.A. County Arboretum’s Lightscape holiday event replaced Moonlight Forest last year. It will now make a bigger comeback in 2022. Watch for the August 10 public sale of tickets, which this year have increased by around $7.

Here’s what we had to say about last year’s experience in the interim:

The mile-long pathway is lined with illuminated trees, and there are roughly ten installations scattered along the way. Spend approximately an hour or so walking around the one-way loop and taking pictures. The vegetation, soaked in color, is surely lovely, but we wish there were just more sparkling things to admire as you stroll in the gaps: A lonely cactus with string lights trimmed is pleading for more prickly companions.

There are a couple of installations in particular that will keep you rooted to the spot. The peaked tunnel of lights that makes up The Winter Cathedral pinches at the end to resemble, well, a cathedral. The main lawn’s carpet of pulsing lights is energizing, the enormous floating lilies in front of the Queen Anne Cottage are tranquil, and the Fire Garden’s spheres filled with torches will make you wish you could roast the DIY s’mores prepared at the event over their open flames. There are some strange selections, such as a blaring projected Walk of Fame of movies shot at the Arboretum or a pitch-black gazebo that is nearly impossible to look at, and then there are some truly strange selections: A maze of reflective mannequins with disco ball heads feels like a Daft Punk fever dream that has no business at a holiday gathering but is unquestionably unforgettable.

Comparisons Between Lightscape And Enchanted

It’s difficult to avoid drawing comparisons between Lightscape and Enchanted at Descanso Gardens as a type of gloomy and winter but not overtly Christmassy light show in the San Gabriel Valley. Enchanted’s grasp of ethereal wonder surpasses Lightscape for around the same price. Additionally, L.A. Zoo Lights, which costs a little less, is more festive and frequently overflowing with lights. However, if you can afford it, we’re confident that Lightscape will provide enough lighted beauty.
