Enchanted: Forest of Light

Time Out says

Enchanted: Forest of Light, The festive tradition at Descanso Gardens’ illuminated artworks will be filled with curiosity and surprise once more.

Prepared to generate original ideas? From November 20, 2022, through January 8, 2023, Enchanted: Forest of Light will be back. The botanical garden’s annual evening event expertly combines interactive art pieces with eerie, glowing forests. All this is set against a backdrop of lit-up trees and shimmering sound effects.

On September 15, general public sales of the $34–$40 tickets begin. Here is our review of the previous year’s event (all of our favorites are anticipated to return)…

Tom Fruin’s kaleidoscopic stained-glass-inspired house has grown into a whole village of buildings for the 2021 edition, including one that you can walk through in the rose garden. On the main lawn, HYBYCOZO’s dazzling multicolored pendants have jumped alongside immobile polyhedrons, one of which you may stand within. That does however imply that the previously present serpentine Candyland-like path is no longer there (the color-changing oak grove should still satisfy all of your stomping-on-lights needs, though).

Ancient Forest

While the mist-filled “Ancient Forest” continues to attract tourists with its setting straight out of E.T., other parts of Enchanted (delightedly) remain much the same as they have in the past. For example, a field of artificial tulips vibrates with waves of dazzling color changes. The “Rainbow Sycamore” columns can still be tapped, and the experience is still intuitively engaging. Additionally, in keeping with its setting in a botanical garden, the majority of the installations showcase the natural beauty of Descanso’s flora. Doing so with a finesse that distinguishes it from other botanical garden light displays that have appeared in recent years.

The walk around “Enchanted” is around a mile, therefore you should wear comfortable shoes. The grounds are mainly flat and the route is well defined. However, if it has recently rained, some of the walks may get a touch spongey. Be sure to layer up before you go because “Enchanted” requires at least an hour to fully experience, and average lows in La Caada Flintridge this time of year can reach the mid-40s.
